Conscious Cinema: Yesterday

“Yesterday” is a 2019 jukebox musical romantic comedy film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis based on a story by Jack Barth and Curtis. Himesh Patel stars as struggling musician Jack Malik, who suddenly finds himself as the only person who remembers the Beatles and becomes famous for performing their songs. The film also stars Lily James, Joel Fry, Ed Sheeran, and Kate McKinnon.

The film raises interesting questions about the nature of our shared reality, what is consensual and what happens when cultural memory is forgotten or is inaccurate — for example, with the Mandela Effect where many believed Nelson Mandela died in prison, despite his actual release and presidency. Also, did the Monopoly Man have a monocle? What did Darth Vader actually say to Luke about being his father? How is the cereal Froot Loops actually spelled?

We have a brief social meet-and-greet and show a film chosen specifically nourish our spirits — whether comedy, drama, documentary, or ??? We’re open to your suggestions! There will be an intermission to mingle, meet, and discuss. After the film we’ll continue the discussion, and simply socialize!

The Cascadia Room has a theater screen with HD projector and high-quality sound. We can seat about 18 people on backjacks (which are floor seats), as well as snuggly foam mats and pillows so you can recline while watching.
