Conscious Cinema: Pleasantville

We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired.

Pleasantville

In this 1998 comedy-drama, a mysterious television repairman (Don Knotts) provides high school student David (Tobey Maguire) with a means to escape into the black-and-white TV program of “Pleasantville” with his sister, Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon). While David initially takes to the simplistic, corny world of the show, Jennifer sets about jolting the characters with doses of reality that unexpectedly bring a little color into their drab existence.

Pleasantville is written, co-produced, and directed by Gary Ross (Big). Intelligent and thought provoking, the film explores passion and what it means to be truly connected with one’s very own aliveness.

“In the twilight of the 20th century, here is a comedy to reassure us that there is hope–that the world we see around us represents progress, not decay. ‘Pleasantville’ is one of the year’s best and most original films.” — Roger Ebert
